Isindi (Georgia)

  • Name of sport (game): Isindi
  • Place of practice (continent, state, nation):

    Georgia

  • History:

    Obraz2

  • Description:

The game proceeds between two teams or horsemen, on square playground. The players are adult males. Start line is drawn as a boundary for lining up the teams on opposite sides. Each team has 6 players (the number of horsemen may increase). The horseman is armed with isindi (one-meter long spear, with “cap” on the end). After drawing of lots, the team, which starts the game, sends the first rider to the front; he is called “challenger”. The rival team puts its rider on the start line to meet the “challenger”. The “challenger” gallops to the rival team and tries to defy the rival rider or his horse by throwing isindi. As the challenger approaches, the rival rider takes off from the line and meets the challenger with his isindi. Only galloping rider can throw isindi. After shooting, the challenger suddenly turns his horse and races back to his team at full speed, but this time the rival tries to defy the oppose using the same tricks, chases him and throws isindi. Trying to avoid isindi, the rider takes cover using the horse’s head; rises, grabs the thrown isindi in his hand and, in the twinkling of the eye, throws the grabbed isindi to the rider, chasing him. Counter-attack starts and the rider, who was targeted at, performs as the attacker. It happens so quickly, nicely and skillfully that causes fascination of all spectators.
The participating teams come to the playground in formation, stand in line facing each other and greet each other. Then the competition starts. The game is leaded by referees, who use whistles to start or, if required, to stop the game.
If, for any reason, the rider or his horse is unable to continue the game, it is possible to replace the rider or his horse; during the game, the chased rider can use any trick to avoid isindi, e.g. hang on the horse, bend aside, etc. If the rider drops isindi, he leaves the game. It is inadmissible to throw isindi at the rider, who fell down or fell from the horse. If the rider falls from the horse, he has the rights to continue the contest under the condition, that he catches his horse within the boundaries of the playground without other person’s help and mounts it. In this case, he loses the right of throwing isindi. If the horse of the fallen rider runs out of the boundaries of the playground, the rider will be considered as dropped out of this “kamara”. If it happens to the chased rider, the game goes on as usual. If the horse takes the rider away from the playground, the rider is considered as dropped out of “kamara”.
It is strictly forbidden: to seize isindi, to hit either rider or the horse with isindi, prick, shout. In the case of dangerous situation, the game is stopped. During the contest, medical and veterinary aid stations are arranged near the playground.
The winner is who hits the rival with isindi more time in the agreed time.
