About Traditional Sports

The interest in old sports, or so-called regional or folk sports, is constantly growing in the world. New clubs and traditional sports festivals are being established to preserve and save the traditions of physical activity of nations from oblivion. Traditional sports in many countries have been consciously developed and also treated as an element of national identity. In other countries, traditional sports have been neglected or even completely forgotten.
For years, Traditional Sports has been collecting and sharing information about the traditional sports of the nations of the world, popularizing this extraordinary achievement of the intangible heritage of humanity. Initially, these were short articles in Polish, but it quickly turned out that this form of promoting traditional sports interested people in many places around the world.
In connection with this, the idea was born to create a virtual collection of information about traditional sports; a resource of knowledge that could be constantly expanded and enriched with the participation of interested people around the world. The most important idea is the cooperation of people and organizations who, in the name of a common but diverse cultural heritage, cooperate to preserve and popularize knowledge about the traditional sports of the nations of the world. We want people around the world to be aware of the existence and importance of traditional sports, a unique combination of culture and physical activity, working together to preserve intangible heritage. We are aware of the importance of traditional sports as an important element of the intangible heritage of humanity. We work with passion and belief that much remains to be discovered, but we believe that determination in action will allow for the effective promotion of traditional sports of the world's nations. The conviction of the essence of this work and the commitment of people participating in this project are a source of success and satisfaction. Everyone who joins the Traditional Sports project, everyone who shares this passion with us, is an important element of the entire team.
Playing sports and promoting one's own culture is a universal right of every person. By combining sport with culture, we strive to promote a way of life based on emotions, values and respect for basic ethical principles: equality, respect and acceptance. We want to reach everywhere where traditional sports are practiced, and where they are not - promote and make people aware of the importance of traditional sports as an achievement of the intangible cultural heritage. The mission of the Traditional Sports project is therefore to promote traditional sports as an important element in creating our cultural identity. We want to interest as many people as possible in the values that traditional sports bring, so that the diversity of its forms inspires attitudes of respect and understanding of cultural differences, so that it connects people and allows for mutual understanding. It is therefore important to:
• show the richness and diversity of forms of sports activity of the nations of the world;
• create and strengthen a positive image of cultural diversity in the form of traditional sports in contemporary society;
• build a reliable source of knowledge about traditional sports of the world, in cooperation with organizations, clubs and specialists from all over the world;
• create a program for the promotion of traditional sports, which allows for a positive impact of this intangible heritage of humanity on contemporary society.
The heart of what we do is respect for cultural diversity. We define the diversity of human activity and adhere to the principles of respect so that everyone can present their cultural heritage on equal terms in an open manner. Adhering to these principles with absolute honesty is therefore essential to who we are. As an organization, we remain politically neutral and exist to serve the interests of all sport and culture.

Within the Traditional Sport project, we set ambitious goals:

  1. Building a structure for cooperation between organizations, associations, federations and individuals in the field of traditional sports.
  2. Developing a network of collaborators around the world (e.g. volunteer networks, coordinators of collaborator groups).
  3. Continuous growth of interest in traditional sports and an increasing number of followers on social media.
  4. Systematic increase in the knowledge base about traditional sports of the world's nations, promoting and updating this knowledge.
  5. Dissemination of knowledge about traditional sports.
  6. Creating the image of a professional center for knowledge about traditional sports, their promotion and protection.
  7. Introducing new methods and innovative solutions in the field of promoting cultural heritage, which is traditional sports.
  8. Using our knowledge and experience to implement activities in the field of protection and promotion of traditional sports as effectively as possible.
  9. Inspiring others, presenting traditional sports in an attractive, interesting and engaging way, in order to attract and retain the largest possible number of fans in the world.

The Traditional Sports project related to the presentation of traditional sports, their popularization and building a collection of information about traditional sports of the world, began its operation on June 6, 2019 with the launch of the website www.traditionalsports.org, around which we gather all interested people and organizations. We want to present traditional sports of the nations of the world, talk about their importance, their stories, present rules, but also photos, videos, results and all possible information about them.
The most important thing in this work is the credibility of information. We are a member of ETSGA European Traditional Sports and Games Association (ETSGA) - http://jugaje.com/wp/, as well as World Ethnosport Confederation - http://worldethnosport.org/EN. We are a reliable source of knowledge about traditional sports of the world. That is also why the Expert Group was established, which is responsible for the substantive side of the undertaking, and if necessary, decides on controversial and debatable issues. The project is open to all who want to get involved in the work of promoting traditional sports as an important intangible heritage of humanity. Every voice, every material and information is important. Therefore, we invite all interested parties to cooperate.
