Jogo do Pau e Bola (Portugal)

Jogo do Pau e Bola (Portugal)

  • Name of sport (game): Jogo do Pau e Bola
  • Name in native language: Jogo do Pau e Bola
  • Place of practice (continent, state, nation):

The game of Pau and Bola are recorded in two geographical areas of Portugal, in Ribatejo in the village of Redunfas in the municipality of Santarém, and in Santa Susana in the municipality of Cintra, confirming the connection of this game between Santarém and Lisbon, with no manifestations being revealed. Similar in other areas of Portugal.

  • History:

This game, both in the past and now and spontaneously, has always been played by male individuals in the two locations where their presence was registered. In the past, due to the lack of entertainment options other than traditional games, practitioners were young, adults and the elderly, and today, only adults over forty and the elderly practice it. There is no record of female presence in the practice of ball and stick.

  • Description:

For the realization of this game, the only raw material for making the game materials is wood, used both for making the balls and the twelve cylindrical sticks of approximately 40 to 50 centimeters that form the set of pins.

  • Current status:

This game is not linked to any type of associative entity, occurring spontaneously by practitioners exclusively male, although currently, this occurrence is increasingly smaller.
This game, in the past and even now and sporadically, its practice occurs on weekends among elderly male individuals in the locations where this game is still practiced, and by adult immigrant individuals on holiday periods.
Currently we can consider that this game of Bola e Pau, being a spontaneous expression is in the process of disappearing, showing itself in a punctual way in the locations of Santa Susana and Redunfas, with no program to revitalize the game in these communities, or any link with entities linked to the organization and development of portuguese traditional games.
