Moldovan Belt Wrestling Association (Moldova)
Belt Wrestling - a sport in full swing in Moldova
Wrestling of all kinds has enjoyed great popularity in Moldavia since ancient times, from the traditional belt Wrestling trynta and Olympic wrestling events (Greco-Roman, freestyle women's wrestling) to martial arts, including various national wrestling events. And belt wrestling is no exception. Internationally, the Moldovan team has been competing in this event since 2007, and since then has returned home with medals from European and World Championships.
The Moldovan Belt Wrestling Federation was created in 2008, founded by the renowned specialists Mihail Cucul, Victor Kurkin, Petru Trofim, Ghenadie Volociughin and Afanasie Salinschi. Afanasie Salinschi was elected president of the forum.
In 2020, Anatolie Moldovan took over the helm of the Moldovan Belt Wrestling Association, and Igor Beșleagă (the most successful Moldovan in the event of belt wrestling, European grappling champion) was elected vice-president. Thanks to his professionalism and hard work, Anatolie Moldovan was elected as a member of the Board of Directors of the International Belt Wrestling Federation and vice-president of the European Confederation.
It should be noted that he is not only a skilled manager, but also one of the most successful fighters in our country: double European champion, World Cup winner, multiple medalists of World Championships, World Universiade and World Nomad Games. And his successors strive to be no less than their redoubtable predecessor.
Thus, at the World Championships held on 14-17 July 2023 in Astana, Kazakhstan, our sportswoman Victoria Bolohan won the supreme title in the up to 76 kg weight category, an absolute first woman from Moldova in this kind of sport. And her teammate Liviu Maluda (+100 kg) finished 3rd in both freestyle and classic style.
Moldovan athletes also won a raft of medals at the European Championships held from 1-4 October 2023 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Victoria Bolohan and Liviu Maluda (freestyle) became the continental vice-champions, while our compatriots Igor Beșleagă (82 kg weight category, with two distinctions: freestyle and classic style), Vitali Colioglo (68 kg, freestyle) and Olga Moldovan (66 kg) won the bronze medals. In the overall team ranking, the Moldovan team came third out of 18 participating countries.
